Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is the national statistical organization of Bangladesh. After gaining independence in 1971, realizing the importance of statistics in proper planning, development and progress monitoring of Bangladesh at all levels, on 26 August 1974 under the direction of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, 4 statistical organizations under the then three ministries (Statistics Bureau under the Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Agriculture) The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) was created by merging the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics and the Census Commission under the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Census Commission under the Ministry of Home Affairs. On July 3, 1975, the Department of Statistics under the Ministry of Planning was established to coordinate, supervise and provide secretarial support to the overall activities of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. Following this, on October 25, 1999, Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Permanent Statistics Building at Agargaon. Later, the "Statistics Act 2013" was passed by the Great National Parliament on 27 February 2013 to provide a legal basis for the National Statistical System.
